The Puppy Bowl’s Over, for Pet’s Sake

10 mins read

If you’re a Tay-Tay and Tray-K (YAY!) fan, then this Valentine’s week is already sweet for you. It’s also sweet because a big-hearted reader named Suzanne has made Animal House headlines for the second week in a row. She’s just adopted Thor, a dog mentioned in last week’s column.

Last week, she adopted a young white male Jindo also featured in this column. We knew him as Aiden, and she renamed him Baby, as an adopted son for her older white female Husky.

Suzanne Verrault writes: “Thor has found his forever home! We shook on it! I adopted Thor, the Mastiff mix that was located at Moreno Animal Shelter. I saw the video of him in a small cage, and he was stressed, going in circles, and looking really thin. My heart sank. He was to be euthanized at 5 pm the next day.  No one was coming forward to save him, not even rescues, but one was willing to pull him if I would take him the next day. I was afraid of how Baby, who I adopted just 5 days prior, would react but I knew I was Thor’s only hope. It stopped the killing, but he still had to be neutered.

“He was transported to me the same day of his operation by a kind foster mother who volunteered. It took some time for Thor to get out of her car. He was still drugged. He has been isolated from my other dogs while he heals, but he bonded to me very quickly. He is getting better every day and loves the food and attention. He is still very thin, just skin and bones! But his tail is wagging; he is safe and, more importantly, alive!

“Baby is not happy having him here! He has been acting out some, but I think in time, they both will adjust and love each other.”

The first of Buddhism’s Four Great Vows translates loosely “Sentient beings are numberless. We vow to save them.” (No pressure, of course.) While attaining this ideal may be tricky, we are grateful for Suzanne’s example.

Meet Kingston and Byron

Thank you, Darlene, for this touching post below.

“What does it take to get people to take in a shy cat?”

• (2) Feline DSH males; bonded siblings/brothers
• Brown tabby makings, no blaze
• Age: 3 years
• Neutered, current on vaccines, dewormed; in fine health
• Playful yet gentle; a bit shy, but ready to become pets.

“These handsome brothers need a furever home! They are both age three, very well-mannered and quiet, but oh, so sweet! Although quite shy, they have made lots of progress. They LOVE to play with their toys, watch Cat TV, and sleep with you! They are neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed. They are in a foster home but cannot stay much longer. They’ve been waiting for months! Seems like people only want cute kittens, but won’t you please take these boys home and see them thrive? Yes, they will hide at first and need extra patience and sweet talk and treats, but what a wonder“fur” gift of love to see them blossom and finally ask for cuddles and give you head bumps! Call 562-972-2408 for more information. Submit your adoption application.

Please, before you pass on these boys because you may want a cute kitten or a very friendly cat, take a moment to read this:

“Just a reminder: when you are adopting a pet, take the time to meet the scared ones, the shy ones, the ones that don’t stick out to you, the ones that hide under their bed, blanket or litter pan; the ones that hiss, the ones that cower, shake and cry and look at you with confusion; the ones with boring colors or missing limbs or the older ones, the frail ones, who seem beyond repair or seem to have given up. Because they are not beyond repair, and they haven’t given up. They just need you. And sometimes you just really need them, too.”

Meet Cody!

Thanks, Celeste, for this heart-warming post.

Cody’s wearing his Valentine’s sweater vest in hopes that you’ll fall in love. He’s a low-key little guy who does not do well with large, loud, young, boisterous, competitive dogs. In a behavioral assessment from the Downey Shelter, the shelter agent recorded:

“Cody was sitting on his bed amongst his kennel mates with a relaxed demeanor. Cody approached the handler at the barrier and greeted them. Cody sniffed the runner’s hand and was easily removed from the kennel. Cody was taken to the play yard and was given time to decompress before the assessment. Cody displayed a relaxed body, closed mouth, high tail with a loose wag, natural ear set, and soft eyes; Cody sniffed and marked various locations in the play yard with a relaxed demeanor. Cody approached the handler placing his paws on their legs and soliciting petting. The handler was able to examine Cody’s mouth, ears, and front paws without issue. The handler proceeded to palpate Cody’s abdomen, back, hind legs, and tail without issue. The handler was able to pick up and carry Cody without issue and Cody leaned his body into the handler’s chest. Cody is ok for public adoption for low energy-level, small dogs.”

We interpret this last sentence to mean that Cody would be OK with other dogs of similar size and temperament.

• Male canine
• Age: 8 years old
• Breed: Heinz 57?
• Coloring: Mostly white, some tan, with large cinnamon ears
• Size/weight: 8 lbs.
• Good manners, quiet, relaxed nature, social and friendly
• In good senior health

Bubbles Babies!

Thank you, Victoria Smith, for these several great posts that follow.

Bubbles Dog Rescue is a tax-deductible 501c3 organization. This rescue will provide all necessary supplies, including vet care and training assistance if needed.

Meet Calvin

“Calvin is a 4-year-old, 54-lb male Boxer mix. He has spent more than half of his life (2-3 years) being overlooked at a small shelter in New York. Now he is a California dog, perfect if you’re looking for a dog to love indefinitely that’s been needing his human or humans his whole life. Calvin is a sweet, affectionate, goofy, active, dog-friendly boy! He is so sweet and easy to love. He is amazing at agility, is super fun, adorable, and loves his humans!

Since he’s gone through training, it’ll be imperative that his training structure and practice are followed. He really, really enjoys being around humans, but he needs an alpha in the house to follow! He’s neutered, UTD on vaccines, and completed the board and train.

Available for transport anywhere within CA and some neighboring states so share with friends/ family!”

Meet Chance!

“Chance is a 2-year-old, 60 lb. Staffy/Pittie mix with the most beautiful coat you’ve ever seen! This handsome young man is looking for the perfect furever home to call his. Or at least a foster! Chance is GREAT with other submissive dogs, especially large dogs he can play with and run around with. Chance also really loves female dogs cause he’s a charmer! Chance loves fetch and toys. He’s such a silly, goofy, happy-go-lucky personality. Chance is a dog that’ll always be smiling and put a smile on your face, too. He has high energy and does great on walks as long as his walker is a strong alpha who can give directions and corrections. He will need a foster or owner who is committed to enforcing the good behaviors he has learned in training. Will you give Chance his second Chance at a life in a home?

Apply to meet Chance for possible foster or adoption!”

Available for transport anywhere within CA and some neighboring states so share with friends/ family!”

Meet Sky!

“A foster or adopter is needed for Sky! She is a 4-year-old, 55 lb. Husky girl who LOVES humans and wants to follow them around and get belly rubs! She loves to offer her paw for shake and give kisses! This happy, silly girl’s tail is ALWAYS wagging! Her favorite toy is her Costco dino and chew bone. She does great in her crate but has also been respectful of furniture when her fosters have left the room for a shower, etc. Sky is very treat-motivated and has the cutest smile! She’s great in cars and is a huge snuggler!

Sky was attacked by another dog in or before the shelter, so has some fear-based tendencies that her trainer has been working on with her. She needs slow and proper introductions to other large dogs but when introduced appropriately, she does very well with them. NOTE: Small dogs and cats are a little too delicious.

Foster or adopt sky! She will be your ride-or-die best friend!

Apply to meet Sky for possible adoption, please fill out the Bubbles Dog Rescue app at:
