News Tips
Please select whether this tip should be handled as public knowledge or hush-hush…
Non-Confidential News Tip
Useful news tips always include several elements.
The most important element is the tip must be newsworthy. For example, it’s probably not newsworthy if your neighbor’s lawn sprinklers run for an hour every day. It may be newsworthy, though, if we’re in a severe drought and your neighbor is in a leadership role at City Hall or at Pasadena Water & Power. We’re sure you can recognize how one of these situations may be newsworthy while the other is not.
Having documentation or some tangible evidence is also a key element of a news tip. Suspicions or hunches about what may be happening can trigger elaborate conspiracy theories. But unless you have a receipt, relevant paperwork or have personally witnessed something happen, speculation that a newsworthy event may be occurring is rarely useful.
Another element of a great news tip is that the situation must have real consequences and be understandable. Our correspondents do amazing work making their reports comprehensible, but if you don’t understand what’s going on and why an event is important, it’s probably not going to make a great news story.
We make every effort to review news tips regularly, and we automatically confirm receipt of information entered here.
Confidential News Tip
If you wish to provide a confidential news tip, we recommend using the US Mail to contact our Senior News Editor. USPS mail is, by far, the simplest method to initially communicate with us privately about your news tip. Our mailing address for confidential information is:
Local News Pasadena
Dept. C
980 East Rio Grande Street
Pasadena, CA 91104
Please mail your information and copies of any documentation to this address. We recommend using a regular blue USPS mailbox, not the counter at a Post Office, when you mail the materials.
We do not recommend using complex electronic services like Signal, PGP or the Tor Project for secure communication with our editors. While these services are designed around privacy, encrypted messaging may not ultimately provide the level of confidentiality your news tip requires.
