This month brings even more than the usual reasons to consider fostering or adopting a shelter animal. August 17 is the International Day of Homeless Animals, and August 26 is National Dog Day.
Even if you aren’t ready to share your space with a new critter, there’s always some way that you can make a difference. You can volunteer and donate to rescues, shelters and sanctuaries like The Duck Sanctuary AKA The Duck Pond, Inc. located in Winchester, in Riverside County. This waterfowl rescue and sanctuary for abandoned domestic ducks and geese keeps an Amazon wish list and is always on the lookout for building supplies including former dog-houses and kiddie play-houses that may be repurposed as anatine (relating to duck, duck, goose!) shelters.
Biochemist and sanctuary founder Howard Berkowitz along with his team of volunteers are usually kept busy caring for our web-footed friends who often start out as an adorably fuzzy, live Easter basket gift, only to be quickly dumped at a pond or roadside when the cuteness wears off and the honking and guano production begin in earnest.
But on July 17, hundreds of fertilized duck eggs intended for sale as balut, a popular Filipino and Southeast Asian street-food delicacy consisting of the still-in-the-shell duckling which is nearly fully developed by day 19 or so, missed the party and hatched instead.
Balut eggs are incubated almost to the point of hatching, then boiled, cooled, peeled, salted and eaten. This particular shipment of balut-bound eggs was late—a balut egg is typically eaten 10 days or so before hatching– a fact which has saved the lives of dozens of ducklings that now are in need of fostering.
Because the original shipment was late, the clients purchased other balut eggs for their event from other suppliers. Meanwhile, the original clutch started bustin’ out all over as Duck Sanctuary volunteers arrived at a warehouse in Brea to triage 400 or so new arrivals.
Many ducklings perished from dehydration, but fosters for the survivors as well as donors are welcome to contact the sanctuary. Berkowitz and his team will provide all needed duckling fostering supplies.

“Watts” Happening
Our girl Ronnie K seeks emergency foster for two medium-sized, young dogs she found literally starving on the streets of Watts.
The way Ronnie usually works is to locate a foster, then contact a rescue which will often help with supplies and expenses.
Ronnie will provide a crate.
She says both dogs are timid but sweet, and giving them a temporary safe haven even for a few nights would make a huge difference in helping them find forever families.
Text Ronnie K at 310-804-1555 if you can assist.
Thanks to TJ and Trish for this next post!

Meet Xolo

- Brown coat
- Not neutered
- Mellow disposition, overweight
This dog was rescued from a park in Temple City by a good Samaritan who can’t keep him. And oh, about that name. While it may sound like a new blood-pressure drug, it’s actually Nahuatl, the language of the great Azteca empire. This rare breed is called the “Mexican hairless” in English.
In the photo, this dog is on the left-hand side of the dog bed. The other dog in photo has a heart condition and is upset by the newcomer.
To meet this vato, email [email protected]
Thank you Kelly Brinkman, for this next post!

Meet the Family
Big shout-out to Melinda La Brie for her heroism and generosity, and for bringing us this story.
Melinda just found a very young stray female cat (estimated to be younger than one year old) and her five newborn kittens (calicos, tabbies) on her family’s property, and is now seeking experienced fosters who are familiar with cat care, kitten care, and will handle the later adoption process. The feline family is now safe indoors, thanks to Melinda’s kindness.
The entire family appears to be in fine health. The mom is very affectionate, nurturing and attentive to her litter, feeds, grooms and bathes them constantly, but may hiss when strangers approach the kittens. However, Melinda notes that mama is not truly aggressive, and will begin to purr softly when quietly spoken to.
Fosters and adopters will be committed to keeping all of the family indoors, will demonstrate financial stability, and will agree to spaying/neutering when age-appropriate. Kittens will need to stay with their mother for eight weeks, and the nursing mother cannot be spayed prior. The family is not yet ready to be separated, but Melinda welcomes responsible queries right now in preparing for the near future. Text 626-755-4037 or email [email protected].

Eric is seeking the owner. If you recognize this dog or can help, contact [email protected]
