Supervisor Kathryn Barger, on behalf of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, presented illuminated scrolls to eight organizations and Pasadena meteorology specialist Edgar McGregor on Tuesday, hailing them as community heroes for their actions before, during and after the Eaton Fire.
“While we’ve witnessed unimaginable grief and loss in the aftermath of the Eaton Fire, we’ve also seen the very best of our community,” said Barger. “Countless organizations, businesses, nonprofits and residents have stepped up when Altadena needed it most. It was an honor to recognize some of the Eaton Fire community heroes who’ve lent a helping hand.”
McGregor was honored for his timely social media updates that provided critical information to residents, many of whom prepared to evacuate in advance of the Eaton Fire based upon his analysis of the Santa Ana wind event and how a firestorm would impact Altadena and Pasadena.
“I actually underestimated the level of destruction,” said McGregor, who manages the Altadena Weather and Climate group on Facebook. “My estimate was that a fire during the windstorm could easily destroy 1,000 buildings. The Eaton Fire destroyed 8,000 structures.”
Community organizations also honored by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday included Pasadena Humane, Rose Bowl Stadium, Kaiser Permanente, Santa Anita Park, Pasadena City College, Altadena Rotary Club, AltaMed and the American Red Cross.
