Boston Court Pasadena, known for its daring and genre-defying theatrical productions, is calling on its community for immediate support following the National Endowment for the Arts’ (NEA) decision to discontinue direct grants to individual arts organizations starting in 2025.
The sudden policy change poses a serious threat to smaller, mission-driven institutions like Boston Court, which rely on NEA funding to maintain their programming and operations. Although the company was a recipient of NEA funding in 2024 and had applied for continued support in 2026, future lifelines from the federal agency have been abruptly cut off.
A Critical Moment for the Arts in Pasadena
“This is a defining moment,” Boston Court leaders shared in a heartfelt message to supporters. “What is at stake is not only funding, but the very kind of daring, genre-defying work that has become our hallmark.”
Without immediate and significant donations, the theater fears it will be forced to curtail the creative freedom that has allowed it to premiere new works, uplift visionary voices, and serve as a cultural sanctuary in Southern California.
Bold Theatre, Now at Risk
Boston Court Pasadena has long been celebrated for championing innovative and socially relevant performances. As a vital fixture in the local arts ecosystem, it has remained resilient through times of societal change—steadfast in the belief that theater can illuminate, challenge, and transform lives.
But the loss of NEA support endangers this mission.
How to Help
The organization is urging patrons, theater lovers, and community members to act now. Contributions will directly fund the artists, technicians, and administrators who bring Boston Court’s productions to life.
“If Boston Court Pasadena has ever moved you, inspired you, or made you proud to support the arts—now is the time to stand with us,” the letter concludes. “We are not ready to dim the lights. With your help, we won’t have to.”
