Careers and Creatives at PCC Extension

Lifelong learning is the goal.

As we regretably acknowledge the early darkness schedule of Daylight Savings Time, we may be tempted to dig out those store-bought fireplace logs, grab a glass of wine, renew the BritBox subscription we canceled earlier in the year, and settle in for that long winter’s nap.

But wait.  When what to our wondering eyes should appear in the mailbox but the Winter 2025 Pasadena City College Extension class catalog, with its creative list of new courses, including retirement planning information and healthy living secrets?

“Extension courses are chosen to bring fun, enrichment and job training to our community,” says PCC District Trustee Tammy Silver, who has been serving District 4 since March 2020.

“These classes are ways for people to try something new for fun, improve existing skills, or start a new career. Many of the extension courses are self-contained, meaning you earn certification and achieve a certain skill level, and you are now ready to be hired,” she continues.

“Some of the courses lead people to want to know more about a topic or reawaken the desire to keep learning. After taking an extension course, students often enroll in more classes at PCC. Age doesn’t matter; we should never stop learning!” says Silver enthusiastically.

The extension courses are a great way to meet people and socialize, keeping you away from devouring the never-ending cable news cycle and last night’s leftover dessert. Some of the new courses include “Break Into Television Commercials,” “Long Distance Real Estate Investing Secrets,” “Live, Work, or Retire Abroad – Affordably,” and “5 Secrets to Good Posture.”  And if you still have some spare time, enroll in “Belly Dance” or “Kundalini Yoga” to go with your “Tappercize” class.

“You meet with your classmates over a number of weeks, hear their new perspectives and ideas, and hopefully share some laughter,” says Silver.

“And here is a great tip,” she continues. “PCC also offers completely free courses in its non-credit division. You can learn keyboarding (typing), how to use Microsoft Windows, and the History of European Art for Older Adults. In only six weeks, you will get halfway to a certificate leading to a job maintaining and repairing electric vehicle charging stations. All for free!”

She’s also speaking of courses that teach you how to become an HVAC, patient care or solar water heating technician. And while you’re at it, why not pick up that Spanish fluency you’ve been meaning to tackle?

Who doesn’t need a course in “Spanish for the Workplace?”
